Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI) is the professional body of Gastrointestinal Endoscopists from India. The Society was formed 34 years ago and has grown steadily. Currently, it has 1625 life members.
SGEI Membership is offered only to individuals having a postgraduate degree (MD/DNB in Medicine, Pediatrics or MS/DNB Surgery) and received a formal training or are actively pursuing Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
The society holds two annual meetings each year. First, is in February-March which usually has a 2-day live workshop, covering both basic and advanced endoscopic procedures. The second one, is a part of joint national meeting with Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG) and Indian Association for Study of Liver (INASL) organized in October-November each year. In addition, there are a several regional and mid-term meetings, often catering to sub-specialties like small bowel endoscopy, ERCP, EUS etc. Members of the society have subsidized registration charges for these meetings. The society, along with other national societies, successfully conducted the APDW2019 at Kolkata. The midterm virtual SGEI meeting was held on 15-16th August 2020. And the next midterm SGEI meeting is scheduled on January 23-24, 2021.
SGEI publishes an endoscopy journal titled – Journal of Digestive Endoscopy (JDE), that has 4 issues every year, including a video section. The first issue of journal was released in January 2010. The journal provides a chance for GI Endoscopist from India and around the globe to publish their work including review articles, case reports, original papers, innovations, book reviews, summary of other published articles.
SGEI recently initiated a novel Gastro-intestinal Endoscopy Technician Training (GETT) program for teaching and upgrading the skills of the Endoscopy Technicians. GETT is a structured teaching program conducted 4 times each year at several regional centers by nodal experts. Also, disinfection guidelines, credentialing of Endoscopists & Endoscopy Centers, as well as standard terminology are other activities of society.
The society collaborates with other societies such as WEO, OMED & American Society of GI Endoscopy (ASGE) for various workshops. International experts regularly visit India for interactive sessions and conferences. The society has also incorporated some of the world leaders in the field as Honorary members.
